During the Spring and Autumn Period (chūn qiū 春秋时期,770-476 BC), the kingdom of Chin was planning to collaborate with kingdom of Ch'in to attack the kingdom of Cheng. Duke Wen of Cheng was sure that he didn't have a chance against these two large kingdoms, and very afraid. So, at the suggestion of one of his official, the duke sent his minister Ju Jr-wu to Ch'in to try to convince the king not to attack Cheng.

In the Spring and Autumn Period (chūn qiū 春秋时期,770-476 BC), there was a beauty in the State of Yue called Xishi (xī shī 西施). She often suffered from pains in her chest, and so she would often walk around doubled over and with her brows knitted. There was an ugly girl in the village called Dongshi who envied Xishi. Striving to emulate Xishi, she imitated her stoop, knitting her brows at the same time. She thought that this made her elegant, but in fact, it only made her more ugly.
Later, this idiom came to be used to indicate improper imitation that produces the reverse effect.

In the Warring States Period (zhàn guó 战国, 475-221 BC), Lian Po and Lin Xiangru were both officials of the State of Zhao. Having rendered outstanding service, Lin Xiangru was promoted above Lian Po. Disgrunted, Lian Po announced that he intended to humiliated Lin the next time he met him. Lin Xiangru, putting the benefit of the country first, avoided Lian Po in order not to cause conflict, thus bringing opprobrium on himself. Later when Lian Po realised his mistake, he was so ashamed that he went to Lin’s home carrying brambles on his naked back and asking for punishment.
This idiom indicates acknowledging one’s mistake and offering a sincere apology.

altFeng Shiuan lived at the home of Meng Chang-jun, prime minister of the state Ch'i during the Warring States Period (zhàn guó 战国).

One day, Meng Chang-jun sent Feng Shiuan to a place called Shue to collect the rent owed to him by the people there. But Feng Shiuan not only did not collect the rent; he aslo burned all of the contracts. The people of Shue were therefore very grateful to Meng Chang-jun.
Sometime later, when he was no longer prime minster, Meng Chang-jun went to live in Shue, and was warmly welcomed by all of the people there. However,Feng Shiuan believed that this was not quite enough. So he went and told the king of Wei what a talented person Meng Chang-jun was, and before long Meng Chang-jun was offered a position in the Wei court. On Feng Shiuan's advice, Meng Chang-jun refused the position, but the king of Ch'i afraid that he would accept, then asked Meng Chang-jun, "You now have a choice of three places where you could live. You can fluff up the pillows and have a good rest."

Thus, "To Fluff Up the Pillows and Have a Good Rest" means to live a happy and worry-free life.
