Free Baggage Allowance
Passengers are entitled to a free baggage allowance: 40kg
for first class, 30kg for business class, 20kg for economy
class. In addition to the free baggage allowance, these
articles will be carried free: a lady's handbag, an overcoat, wrap or blanket, an umbrella or walking stick, a reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight, a small camera, a
pair of binoculars, infant food and an infant carrying basket, a fully collapsible invalid's wheelchair and or a pair of crutches?and/or braces or other prosthetic device for the passenger's use provided that the passenger is dependent upon them.

The rule of thumb is to pack lightly, and to bring casual clothes. A sturdy, comfortable
pair of walking shoes is an absolute. A sports coat and a nice shirt for man, and one or
two dresses or pantsuits for women will suit the most formal occasions to be encountered
in China. Travelers should bring shirts, sweaters and jackets that can be worn in layers to
suit a range of climates. Shorts (for both men and women) are fine for summer days though not recommended when visiting religious shrines. Remember, dress for Comfort, not for

There are two documents required for foreign tourists who want to travel in Tibet. One is the Chinese Visa, which you can apply for in Chinese Embassy in your place. Another is the Alien's Travel Permit issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau.
Non-Chinese passport holders (including those of Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and other countries) must have an Alien's Travel Permit as well as a valid passport and a visa (Travelers from countries having visa exemption agreement with Hong Kong do not need a visa) to visit Tibet. Visa can be obtained from the local China consulate in your country. Since the government encourages group tours to Tibet the permit is issued only to tour groups traveling with a Chinese tour operator. Your travel agency will represent you to facilitate the application process. |

 What can I expect upon entering the airport?
Beijing Capital Airport is a modern, medium sized airport (the new airport, one of the most modern airports on our planet will be open to the public in mid 2008). After leaving the aircraft you proceed to the health and immigration counters. Depending on the arrival bridge, this takes approx. 3 to 7
minutes.
What kinds of formalities am I likely to face?
On board of your arriving flight the crew distributes 3 forms to each passenger:
a) a health declaration
b) the immigration form
c) customs declaration form.

Getting news
 There are some local English language news media in China. CCTV 9 is an English channel available in most cities. China Daily is an English newspaper available in upscale hotels and supermarkets catering to foreigners throughout China. There are also a few English magazines such as China Today.
Hotels above mid-ranged or mid-ranged often have satellite TV in the room. Many hotels also sell newspapers from around the world and business-oriented publications like The Economist, albeit at very high prices. Some provide international newspapers free for reading in their coffee shops.
However, there are a number of ways to get uncensored news in China. |
