National Library to Open Free to Readers

The National Library of China will allow readers free entry beginning February 7, the first day of the Chinese lunar new year, the Beijing Times reports.

Readers will need only their identification cards to gain access to the National Library's services and facilities. They will also enjoy discounted services such as document copying, archive delivery, and CD burning.

Zhan Furui, the head librarian, says the fee exemption and service discounts won't affect the quality of library services.

Mall restaurants often struggle with cookie-cutter spatial limitations and functional, if uninspiring, design. That said, Supreme Thai attempts to overcome these challenges with modern elements such as simple white tables and red privacy curtains.

In any case, the straightforward ambiance kept our attention focused on the menu. We enjoyed the fresh pomelo salad (RMB 49) and a satisfactory green curry with chicken (RMB 49), which made up with freshness what it lacked in spice. The highlight of the meal was the minced pork with basil (RMB 39). Indeed, it seems the kitchen excels in delivering localized versions of Thai favorites.

Well, why not? We went with the flow, no doubt encouraged by the eager staff and reasonably-priced Lindemans Chardonnay (RMB 28 per glass).

Shanghia 1st: Dunkin' Donuts comin' to China

Dunkin' Donuts said it plans to open its first shop in Shanghai this spring, with 100 more Chinese franchise locations planned over the next 10 years.

The Canton-based seller of coffee and baked goods also plans an additional 10 shops this year in Taiwan, where it opened its first location in January 2007. Dunkin' Donuts now has 10 shops in Taipei, Taiwan, operated by franchise partner Mercuries & Associates.

Dunkin' Donuts recently granted Taiwan-based Mercuries franchise rights in Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhijiang.
