Repulse Bay

The Repulse Bay  (浅水湾 qiǎn shuǐ wān) is the sandy beach of having the highest representative characteristics in Hong Kong by its long and broad beach, clean water, fresh sand, calm tide and gentle wave. There constructed on the sandy beach a Sea View Tower of Chinese ancient colour, inside which there are images of Tin Hau  (天后 tiān hòu)(the Queen of Heaven and Protectress of Seafarers) and Goddess of Mercy (观音 guān yīn), Avalokitesvara (千手观音 qiān shǒu guān yīn) more than ten meters high. Beside it, there is a Bridge of Longevity (长寿桥 cháng shòu qiáo) across which the image of Yuexia Laoren (the god of matchmaker) is there with a conjugal felicity stone beside him. It is said that after worshipping the god of matchmaker and striking the conjugal felicity stone, the conjugal felicity surely emerges. This is the place marriage seekers must come. At the back part of the beach, there is a building of colonial colour---Repulse Bay, whose predecessor was the Repulse Bay Hotel and now the catering and recreation center.Repulse Bay, located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island, is the most spectacular bay in the region. Its name comes from a 19th century battle in which the British army repulsed attacking pirates. Today, Repulse Bay is a luxurious residential area for dining, relaxation, and aquatic activities.


altThe beach stretches long with clear azure blue water gently lapping the seashore. Its sand is golden and soft. With water temperatures ranging from 16 C (60.8F) to 26 C (80.6F) year round, it is a mecca for locals and visitors alike to escape the heat.

Swimming is obviously popular and the bay is outfitted for safety with shark prevention nets and floating platforms. During the summer, lifeguards are on duty.

Besides aquatic activities, there are extensive facilities for visitors. Barbecue racks are available under the shade near the beach. In addition, the area is dotted with hotels, supermarkets, and cafes. A lighthouse near the beach is a popular place to take photos. Watching the sunset is another popular pastime for visitors. The Zhenhai Tower Park, built in the traditional Chinese style, is located near the beach. Huge statues of the Queen of Heaven and the God of Mercy (Kwan-yin) sit in front of the park.

altThis popular sandy bay has many facilities, such as shops, restaurants and bars, and during the summer the beach is packed with people everyday, even on weekdays. The eastern end of the beach is home to statues of the goddess of mercy, Kwun Yun, and the goddess of the sea, Tin Hau. The nearby temple houses many other religious figures, including a four-faced Buddha draped in pearl necklaces and ornaments. In front of the temple is the Longevity Bridge, and it is said that anyone crossing it can add three days to his or her life.

How to get there:
Repulse Bay is served by Repulse Bay Road, which connects Wong Nai Chung Gap Road and Tai Tam Road. It is very convenient for people to travel to Repulse Bay as there many bus routes from Central, such as no. 6, 6A, 6X, 260; or the no. 40 minibus. Transportation either takes you express through the Aberdeen Tunnel, or along the slightly longer scenic Click above picture to view the maproute.Beach-goers may also opt to drive there. The beach provides some parking space, and the nearby Repulse Bay Hotel also has parking facilities.
