Going east along the Chang'an Street (cháng ān jiē 长安街), you will see a building complex to the north of the Gaobeidian (gāo bēi diàn 高碑店) exit of the Jingtong Expressway (jīng tōng gāo sù 京通高速). That is the Red Sandalwood Museum (zhōng guó zǐ tán bó wù guǎn 中国紫檀博物馆). It's owned by Ms. Chan Lai Wah, who is CPPCC member, chairlady of Fuwah International Hongkong, honorary humanity doctor and director of the college directorate of the Savannah College of. It's the first and largest private museum in China specialized in collecting, researching and displaying red sandalwood works of art and connoisseurship of classical furniture, which fills a vacancy in the field of Chinese museum. 

altChina Red Sandalwood Museum itself can be ranked as a grand and perfect artwork. With an area of 5000 square meters the museum combines antique flavor and modern glamour. The whole design is magnificent with delicate inner parts at the same time. The entrance gate is of wood structure with more than 400 square meters of wood logs employed. The four supporting pillars are 8 meters high with a diameter of 0.6 meter. Both the size and the wood quality are rare in the buildings of traditional style in Beijing. The five-storey main building applies the technique of rubbed brickwork which makes the bricks fit together perfectly. The square in front of the museum is made of in tung oil soaked blue bricks, which were only used by the royal family in ancient time. The experts, who Ms. Chan has convened to instruct the whole project are experts specialized in carpenter, tile and paintings who worked in the Palace Museum after the founding the PRC. These experts are called "living national treasure".


altThe area of the exhibition halls of China Red Sandalwood Museum is 9569 square meters, including the central hall, exhibition hall, meeting room, honored guests' room, multi-functional hall temporary exhibition hall and so on. Classical furniture of Ming and Qing Dynasties collected by Madam Chan for several decades, quality traditional furniture made by artisans in recent 30 years under the supervision of Madam Chan, artworks of Buddhist culture and also row logs and structure of the traditional furniture are displayed here. You can also appreciate the models of well-known buildings of old style: the Corner Tower of the Forbidden City, Thousand Autumn Pavilion and Thousands of Spring Pavilion in the imperial garden, Memorial Gateway at Longquan Temple of Wutai Mountain in Shanxi which is caved with 320 dragons with different postures, Beijing Quadrangle Dwellings, Heavenly Pavilion in Shanxi and so on. These artworks made of red sandalwood convey the eastern charm.

altFor almost 5 years since its opening, Red Sandalwood Museum has received a lot of tourists and political big names from different countries. It has become an important spot for the opening up of Beijing and the culture communication between China and abroad. Romanian Premier and his wife, Vise-Premier of Thailand Somkid Jatusripitak, Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and former German President Wiezock have all visited China Red Sandalwood Museum and made their inscriptions.
