History
Chongqing's Old BuidingsChongqing's history extends back at least 3,000 years, endowing it with much historical and cultural significance and is the birthplace of Bayu culture (bā yú wén huà 巴渝文化). In the Shang Dynasty (shāng 商)(1600-1027 BC) and Zhou Dynasty (zhōu 周)(1027-221 BC) Ba people founded the Kingdom of Ba, and made Chongqing their capitol, called Jiang (jiāng zhōu 江州) and Chu Prefecture (chǔ zhōu 楚州).

BuildingsDuring the Sui (suí 隋) and Tang (táng 唐) dynasties, (581-907 AD), it was known as the sub-prefecture of Yuzhou (yú zhōu 渝州), hence its standard name is "Yu (yú渝)".
Subsequently, during the Northern Song Dynasty (běi sòng 北宋)(960-1127 AD), it was renamed Gongzhou (gōng zhōu 恭州).
In 1189, during the Southern Song Dynasty (nán sòng 南宋), Zhao Dun (zhào dūn 赵惇), later the Guangzong Emperor (sòng guāng zōng 宋光宗), was given the title Prince of Gong. Regarding this as an exceedingly joyous event, he upgraded its status to that of a prefecture and renamed it as "Chongqing'' or "redoubled celebration'', the name it carries to this day.

OverlookIn 1891 Chongqing became an open port, and in 1929 Chongqing was officially declared a city. During World War II, Chongqing was made an alternate capitol after the fall of Nanjing (nán jīng 南京), which was then the capitol of the Kuomintang (guó mín dǎng 国民党) government. During this period, Chongqing became China's political, economic, financial, commercial, transportation, cultural and diplomatic center. In 1954 Chongqing became a city under the jurisdiction of the Sichuan (sì chuān 四川) Provincial Government. In 1992, Chongqing became a riparian open city.
On March 14, 1997, Chongqing became China's fourth municipality directly under the central government, the only one in west China, opening a new chapter in the history of Chongqing.

By bus
City buses in Chongqing are classified into ordinary, medium-grade and high-grade vehicles and prices range from Y1 to Y3 for across town routes. The medium ones correspond to air-conditioned buses in other cities. The starting fare is CNY1.5 and a little bit higher than ordinary ones. The smaller 700 buses and some of the small 800 buses run as late as midnight.

TaxiBy taxi
Flag fall Y5 (Y1.20 per km) is the cheapest of any major city of this size.
The distinctive "bee" yellow of the regular Chongqing taxi is a rather appropriate colour as they work hard to move people around the city and the high-quality service of the clean taxies is one of the characteristics of Chongqing.
Tips: Taxis will often be hard to find from about 3.00pm until 5.00pm which is when they are returning to base to refuel for a change of shift and unless you are going where they are headed you may have to wait for some time and fight for your turn.

The first city rail line in western China, light rail line No.2, went into operation on June 18, 2005. It runs partway along the Jialing River and has become a popular sightseeing ride for both locals and tourists.
