jiumenxiaochiThe story of Jiumen Xiaochi (jiǔ mén xiǎo chī 九门小吃) begins like many other stories of snack sellers in modern Beijing. Menkuang Hutong was a street where families sold traditional snacks using recipes and and skills that got passed down for generations. The hutong demolished some years back, to make room for new developments.

chatangli九门小吃- Chatang Lee (chá tāng lǐ 茶汤李)
Chatang (茶汤,iterally "tea soup") or seasoned flour mush is a traditional gruel common to both Beijing cuisine and Tianjin cuisine, and often sold as a snack on the street. It is made from sorghum flour and/or broomcorn millet and/or proso millet flour and glutinous millet flour.Established in 1858,this restaurant has enjoyed good reputation for Chatang / Miancha / Youcha (茶汤/miàn chá 面茶/yóu chá油茶). 
 

niangaoqian九门小吃- Nian gao Qian (nián gāo qián 年糕钱)
Nian gao, Rice cake, Year cake or Chinese new year's cake is a food prepared from glutinous rice and consumed in Chinese cuisine. It is available in Asian supermarkets and from health food stores. While it can be eaten all year round, traditionally it is most popular during Chinese New Year. It is considered good luck to eat nian gao during this time, because "nian gao" is a homonym for "higher year."This restaurant was established in early 1880s.


yangtouma九门小吃-Sheep Head Ma / Yang Tou Ma (yáng tóu mǎ 羊头马)
As one of the oldest Beijing local snacks, Sheep Head Ma have enjoyed a good reputation for their distictive sheep's head mutton. It was established in the late 1830’s. The interesting thing is that they use ox horn as container with salt, clove and peper powders.

doufunaobai九门小吃-Jellied Tofu Bai / Doufunao Bai(dòu fǔ nǎo bái 豆腐脑白)
Doufunao( 豆腐脑)is a Chinese dessert made with an extra soft form of tofu. It is also referred to as tofu pudding. In northern China,it is often eaten with soy sauce, thus resulting in a savory flavor.This restaurant was established in 1877, also known as Xi Yu Zhai (xī yù zhāi 西域斋).

Like yogurt, its cheese is smooth and sweet. If you travel Beijing, you should not miss Cheese Wei, which is one of the three best cheese shops in Beijing. What’s more, its wonderful and cheap cheeses.It was established in 1857

This restaurant was established in 1881, also known as Ji Sheng Long (jīn shēng lóng 金生隆). It is famous for Quick-fried tripe.

九门小吃-Jun Wang De Shun Zhai  (jùn wáng dé shùn zhāi 俊王德顺斋)
De Shun Zhai is one of the classic local snacks in Jiumen Xiaochi. It's Shaobing has a flavor of sesame paste with fennel and pepper seasonings

This restaurant was established in 1929.

九门小吃-Ma Ji Yue Sheng Zai (mǎ jì yuè shèng zhāi 马记月盛斋)
This restaurant dates from 200 years ago during the reigns of Qianlong of Qing Dynasty.It is famous for braised mutton with soy sauce.

九门小吃-Xian Bing Zhou (xiàn bǐng zhōu 馅饼周)
Meat pie,a traditional Chinese cuisine,is often enjoyed by local people as breakfast.This restaurant was established in 1910's, also known as Tong Ju Guan. (tóng jù guǎn 同聚馆)

Lian Ta Huo Shao ,a classic local snack in Beijing ,is also called  Fried wheaten pancake with meat and sea cucumber fillings.

九门小吃-Xiao Chang Chen (xiǎo cháng chén 小肠陈)
Lu Zhu Huo Shao, a popular dish in Beijing, is composed of wheaten cake, pork intestine, pork lung and/or pork liver which are boiled together in a wok. A bowl of Lu Zhu Huo Shao contains staple food, non-staple food and hot soup.It's established in the late 19th century

九门小吃-Tang hu lu Guo (táng hú lǔ guō 糖葫芦郭)
As one of the special snacks in Beijing,Tang hu lu (sugarcoated haws on a stick) has enjoyed a high reputation.
