Jewelry Shanghai 2009, which is the Premier Jewelry Trade Fair in Eastern China, is expected to be showcased at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from May 13-16, 2009.
The fair is organized by influential organizations in the jewelry sector of China, these include Gem & Jewelry Trade Association of China, National Gems & Jewelry Technology Administrative Centre, Shanghai Gold Exchange, Shanghai Diamond Exchange, Shanghai Gold & Jewelry Trade Association, Shenzhen Gold Jewelry Association and Shanghai Gem and Jade Association. This ensures that products showcased are of top quality. With it's strategic geographical location it is now considered a gateway to the Chinese market.
China’s sales has grown ten percent (10 %) since last year, which makes it one of the world’s top market for platinum consumption and with gold and diamond purchases standing in the 4th and 5th place, respectively. Jewelry makers view Shanghai as a market that will become important for foreign manufacturers and merchants.

In the year 2006, China still ranked the first of the world platinum consumption, accounting for 44% of the world total volume.
Gold
In 2006, China gold consumption reached to 240 tons, ranking the third in the world.
Diamond and diamond jewelry
From July 1, 2006, China has been adopting new policy for imported diamond. The raw stone imported by Shanghai Diamond Exchangeis exempt from import VAT. The VAT of loose stone is cut down from 17% to 4%. Consequently, the trade statistics shows that in 2006, the import volume of diamond grow 39.8% (by the regular way)and 208%(by Shanghai Diamond Exchange)respectively, compared with that of last year.
