The 6th China International Gold, Jewellery & Gem Fair – Guangzhou will be strategically scheduled from 9 to 12 May in 2009, with the first congress of the International Coloured Gemstone Association (ICA) to be held in Panyu, in a bid to create more business opportunities for the industry.

The biennial ICA Congress is one of the significant events for the coloured gemstone industry. It has been held previously in Dubai, Thailand, India, Australia and Italy, enhancing the development of the coloured gemstone industry in these regions. In 2009, the ICA Congress will take place in Panyu, China, inviting more than 500 global coloured gemstone corporations to explore the current status of and prognosis for the coloured gemstone market in China, giving impetus to the industry. CMP will cooperate closely with the Panyu government to invite ICA members to visit the Guangzhou Fair, where they can meet jewellery companies from Panyu and around the world to establish business links.

Market Overview

Guangdong' s Vital Jewellery Industry

Guangdong's jewellery industry has flourished in various sectors, such as diamond and gemstone polishing and inletting, jewellery manufacture and processing, the wholesaling of jewellery raw materials, etc. Statistics from Guangzhou Customs show that the total export turnover for Guangdong jewellery in 2007 reached US$4.03 billion, a 16.5 percent growth over the previous year. More than 3,080 companies dealt with jewellery exports, some 1,000 more than in 2004, reflecting the optimistic prospects for the jewellery industry.

altThe jewellery industry in Guangdong Province and its surrounding regions is booming: Shenzhen is strong in jewellery production for domestic sales; Panyu's jewellery production and processing is flourishing, focusing on both overseas and domestics sales; Huadu is superior in the production of semi-precious stones and fashion accessories; Jieyang is famous for high-end jadeite; Conghua is expert in diamond processing; and Sihui is proficient in jade carving and processing. Panyu dominates the World's Jewellery

Panyu is recognised as "a special production base for jewellery in China." The large-scale industry here is famous for high-quality products and craftsmanship. In addition, many overseas corporations have invested in Panyu, making its jewellery truly international. There is therefore no doubt that Panyu is an international jewellery hub and is also called the "Chinese Vicenza."

Guangzhou is one of the significant jewellery raw materials wholesaling spots in China, where there is a good transportation network facilitating import of different kinds of jewellery raw materials from other regions. There are many plazas in Guangzhou famous for the trading of raw materials. Liwan Plaza and Hualin Jade Street are examples. Thousands of jewellery dealers worldwide come here to source their materials.

  • The world's largest platinum jewellery market for four straight years, which represents 53% of total world consumption, equivalent to US$3 billion.
  • The world's fourth largest gold consumer with annual sales exceeding 224 metric tonnes in 2004.
  • altThe world's second largest diamond processor and Asia's second largest jewellery market. The growth of diamond import in the first half of 2005 reached 17.5%, maintaining its fifth position worldwide in diamond jewellery consumption.
  • The world's largest supplier of clear-water pearls, accounting for 95% of the global output. With the realization of the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Hong Kong and China, China in the next ten years aims to become a key global pearl trading center.
  • The Asia's largest jade market and is poise to become the world's leading jade consumer.
  • An increasing market for pearl jewellery, with surging demand for South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls. China regards South Sea Pearl Consortium and GIE Perles de Tahiti as a promotional highlight.
