The amalgamation of the Fourth Military Medical University and the Fifth Military Medical University in 1954 brought forth the present Fourth Military Medical University. The former Fourth Military Medical University grew out of the Medical school, initially set up in 1941,under the Northwest Shanxi Military Command. The former Fifth Military Medical University developed from the Medical College of the National Central University (Nanjing) .In 1959,The University was ratified by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party as one of the 20key University in China. In 1997, was accredited as one of first university admitted into "211 project", a grand program aiming at boosting 100key higher learning institutions to meet the challenge of the 21st century launched by the State Council of the People's Republic of China

中国人民解放军第四军医大学是一所为军队培养高、中层次医学专门人才的全国重点大学。学校1954年由原第四军医大学和原第五军医大学合并而成。原第四军医大学的前身是创建于1941年的八路军晋西北军区卫生学校，原第五军医大学的前身是创建于1935年的国立中央大学医学院。学校1959年被确定为全国首批重点大学，1995年进入军队重点建设院校行列，1997年成为国家首批“211工程”重点建设院校。学校校本部坐落在古城西安，占地面积2840亩。
