Nanjing University, one of China's key comprehensive universities under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, dates from 1902 when it was known as Sanjiang Normal School. During the following decades, it evolved as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, the Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University. On August 8, 1949, National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University. In October 1950, as required by the Ministry of Education, the name was changed to Nanjing University (NJU). In 1952, due to the nationwide restructuring of colleges and universities, some academic units such as the School of Engineering and the School of Agriculture were separated from the university; meanwhile, it merged with the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Sciences of the University of Nanking founded in 1888. Its name remained while its campus moved from Sipailou to Gulou. Today’s NJU consists of three beautiful campuses, Gulou ,Pukou, and Xianlin . As a top university in China, it boasts advanced teaching and research facilities. Its current President is Dr. Chen Jun, a geochemist. Each year, the University celebrates its anniversary on May 20. 南京大学是直属国家教育部的重点综合性大学,坐落在钟灵毓秀、虎踞龙蟠的六朝古都南京。自1902年创建以来,她先后经历三江师范学堂、两江师范学堂、南京高等师范学校、国立东南大学、第四中山大学、国立中央大学等时期;1949年8月8日,由国立中央大学更名为国立南京大学;1950年10月按教育部规定,去掉“国立”二字,迳名南京大学;1952年全国高校院系调整,南京大学调整出工学、农学、师范等部分院系后与创办于1888年的金陵大学的文学院、理学院等合并,仍名南京大学,并将校址从四牌楼迁至鼓楼金大原址。 International students are an integral part of the NJU campus. Interactions among students with different backgrounds and experiences create a dynamic environment for living and studying. The Institute of International Students, founded in 1955, has received more than 18,000 international students from over 70 countries. Its present enrollment is around 1,700. Its website provides information about academic programs, application and admissions, tuitions, HSK, etc. The Johns Hopkins University-- – Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies Established in 1986, the Hopkins- Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies is an educational joint venture between NJU and the Johns Hopkins University in the US. Chinese students study the US and the international system in English with American professors, while international students focus on contemporary China and are taught by Chinese professors in Mandarin. Additionally, with collaborative research projects, joint seminars and cross-registration opportunities, the center fosters a rich cross-cultural learning experience. Each year, it has approximately 100 students in the Certificate program and 40 in the MA program (half Chinese and half international). China is situated in East Asia, on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean. It has a total land area of 9.6 million square kilometers, slightly smaller than that of Europe. China is a huge country with a long history and rich cultural heritage.
