Founded in 1958, Fuzhou University is one of the national key universities that are selected into the “211 Project”, a Chinese government programme for the 21st century to support 100 selected universities for their further rapid development. Since establishment, Fuzhou University has developed into a key comprehensive university in Fujian Province, giving priority to engineering courses and also enjoying a reputation for excellence in other fields including sciences, economics, management, liberal arts, law, arts and design, etc.

The year 2008 is witnessing the 50th anniversary of the founding of Fuzhou University. The University has established its fast development strategy, that is, the entrepreneurial university with regional characteristics, which will accelerate the university development course to become one of the most prestigious universities in the southeast region of China as well as to make more contributions to the economic zone on the west bank of the Taiwan Straits and the whole nation.

College & Programme

In the University, there are 19 colleges mainly for undergraduate education:College of Mathematics and Computer Science, College of Physics and Information Engineering, College of Chemistry and Chemical engineering, College of Civil Engineering, College of Machine Engineering and Automation, College of Material Science and Engineering, College of Biological Science and Engineering, College of Electric Engineering and Automation, College of Environment and Resources, College of Management, Law School, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Public Management, School of Foreign Languages, College of Software, College of Industrial Art in Xiamen, College of Architecture, Zijin College of Mining and Bafang College of Logistics. There are 64 bachelor’s degree programmes, 1 national center for theoretical research in science and personnel training, 1 national integrated circuit personnel training center, 2 national demonstration center for experimental teaching, 4 national supporting sites for superior subjects,2 national outstanding courses and over 30 provincial key courses.

In addition, the University has Graduate School (in preparation), College of Further Education, College of Overseas Education, and two independently operated colleges -- Zhicheng College and Yangguang College.

Subject Development  

The University has 1 national key subject, 1 national key subject (cultivating), 7 national key developing subjects for “211 Project ”, 23 provincial key subjects. There are 3 post-doctoral research stations, 4 doctoral degree programmes for the first-rank disciplines, 40 doctoral degree programmes for the second-rank disciplines, 14 master’s degree programmes for the first-rank disciplines and 103 master’s degree programmes for the second-rank disciplines, 3 professional degree authorization stations (namely, MBA, Master of Laws and Master of Engineering covering 16 engineering fields).

Student Enrollment  

At present, there is an enrollment of more than 26,000 full-time students in Fuzhou University, including approximately 4,000 doctoral and master’s degree students and over 22,000 undergraduate and junior college students. In addition, there are over 1,600 graduate students studying for different professional degrees and over 8,000 students for adult education certificates. Since its establishment, more than 90,000 students with various degrees graduated from the University. The University has been approved by the Ministry of Education to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan regions and foreign countries.

Research Achievements  

In Fuzhou University, there is 1 National Engineering and Research Centre for Chemical Fertilizer Catalyst, 1 engineering and research center of the Ministry of Education, 1 national key laboratory developed by Fujian Province and the Ministry, 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education developed by Fujian Province and the Ministry, 8 provincial engineering(technology) research(design) centers, 1 provincial laboratory of engineering, 7 provincial(university) key laboratories (open to the public), 2 provincial research bases for liberal arts, 3 provincial industry technology development base and 1 provincial university analysis and measurement center. Since “the Tenth 5-year Development Plan”, the University has undertaken over 3,600 scientific and technological projects with funds of more than 500 million yuan, and the University has undertaken 276 national and provincial important scientific and research projects. 155 national, ministerial and provincial scientific and technological research awards have been achieved, including the three national awards, i.e. National Natural Sciences Award, National Technological Invention Award and National Scientific and Technological Progress Award. The University ranks the first 46-69 positions stably among all the universities in China with regard to the scientific and technological paper inclusion and quotation by the three most important international search systems. The amount of granted patents has been increasing year by year, and 158 patents have been granted.

Academic Exchange 

The University has established collaborative relationship with scores of domestic universities and institutes and has been endeavoring to improve cooperation with enterprises and local organizations so as to meet the demands of regional and national economic development. Academic exchanges on science, teaching and culture with Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao regions have been actively carried out, taking advantage of the relationship of Two-side of the Straits and Three-region and focusing on cultural exchanges between Fujian and Taiwan. The University has established a favorable collaborative relationship with more than 20 universities in different countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, Japan, South Korea and so on. International education cooperation programmes developed with the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Ulster in UK and the State of Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany have been performed. The University is also engaged in positively promoting the exchanges between Chinese civilization and western civilization. “Library of the Western Belvedere”, the first western works center in China, and Institute of International Sinology have been established. Professor Kristofer Marinus Schipper, an internationally famous sinologist and member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, has been working long time in the University, engaging in academic research, exchange and teaching on sinology. The University has become an important window for internationally and regionally technological and cultural exchanges in Fujian Province.

Basic Equipments & Public Service System

Now Fuzhou University has several campuses, such as Yishan campus, Qishan campus and the campus of the College of Industrial Art in Xiamen, covering areas of about 4500 Mu. The main campus is Qishan campus which is located in the University Town of Fuhzou Region. The present floor space of the University buildings for public use has reached more than 1 million square meters with the total about 1.3 billion yuan of fixed assets and over 300 million yuan value of teaching and research instrument and equipment. The University central library holds more than 2 million volumes, over 660 thousand electronic books, over 600 thousand electronic journals and more than 7000 Chinese and foreign journals. Meanwhile, 36 full-text data bases in Chinese language and foreign languages, such as EI and CA, have been introduced. The University computer network is used as the Fuzhou main connection to Chinese Education and Scientific Research Network. The University network has been developed to be an expedite information service platform with high speed covering the whole university. The sports fields cover areas of more than 200 thousand square meters.

● 学院设置
学校现有19个以本科生培养为主的学院:数学与计算机科学学院、物理与信息学院、化学化工学院、土木工程学院、机械工程及自动化学院、材料科学与工程学院、生物科学与工程学院、电气工程与自动化学院、环境与资源学院、管理学院、法学院、人文社会科学学院、公共管理学院、外国语学院、软件学院、厦门工艺美术学院、建筑学院、紫金矿业学院、八方物流学院等,设置64个本科专业,拥有1个国家理科基础科学研究和教学人才培养基地,1个国家集成电路人才培养基地,2个国家级实验教学示范中心,4个国家级特色专业建设点,2门国家精品课程,30多门省级精品课程。另外,学校还设有研究生院(筹)、继续教育学院、海外教育学院以及至诚学院、阳光学院等2个独立学院。
● 学科建设
学校拥有1个国家重点学科,1个国家级重点(培育)学科,7个国家“211工程”重点学科建设项目,23个省级重点学科。已有3个博士后流动站,4个一级学科博士点,40个二级学科博士点,14个一级学科硕士点,103个二级学科硕士点,3个专业学位授权点,即工商管理硕士(MBA)、法律硕士(JM)和工程硕士(含16个工程领域)。
