Hot Spot for Fashion

There's no better way of getting business off to a good footing in the new year than by taking part in Asia's biggest garment and fashion event – Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter.

Top Place for Trade

Hong Kong is at the heart of Asia's fashion business, a fact that's underlined by the city's strong trade performance. Hong Kong's total exports of clothing and clothing accessories grew to over US$28 billion in 2007, with exports to the top two markets – the US and the EU – growing by 1.3% and 6.4% respectively.

Chic Venue

The 2009 event will be a special one, marking the 40th edition of Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter. Over the decades the fair has continually built on its success and strong market position, with a total of 1,490 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions taking part in the 2008 fair.

Part of the fair's strong reputation rests on its anticipation of and adaptation to market needs through its considered collection of themed and product zones. Making its debut in 2009 is the Fabrics & Yarn. This zone focuses on the very basics of the fashion and garment trades and will include fabrics such as cotton, embroidery, functional fabrics, knitted fabrics, linen, ramie, lingerie fabrics, man-made fabrics, silky fabrics and wool, as well as many types of fibres and yarns.

One of the fair's highlighted product zones is Spice Arena, which focuses on the growing market for fashion accessories such as hats, shoes, scarves and handbags. Another is Infant & Children's Wear Zone, catering for this rapidly-growing market sector. The fair also includes Emporium de Mode, a special themed zone dedicated to quality clothing with eye-catching designs. The other four zones are the mass market Garment & Accessories Mart; Fashion Gallery with high-end fashion from around the world; exquisite styles in the Bridal & Evening Wear Zone; and sleepwear, swimwear and underwear in the Body & Intimate Wear Zone.

altBuyer Bonanza

It's little wonder that buyers are attracted by the fair's many attractions, solid reputation for delivering results and prime location in the heart of Asia's world city. As a result, 23,700 buyers from 100 countries and regions came to do business at Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2008.

Stylish Synergy

Taking place at the same time and same place is World Boutique, Hong Kong, Asia's first showcase event for designers and brands. This event presents fashion designers' collections, altbranded fashion products, fashion accessories, home fashion & lifestyle products, and small gifts.

Buyers' Comments

"We have brought in a delegation comprising managers from 10 mainland department stores of Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Tianjin, Dalian and Qingdao who are all interested to source new brands for their stores. Some of them have already spotted some companies offering young ladies' wear, handbags, fashion watches and accessories. We really appreciate that HKTDC organised a round-table meeting to introduce us to prospective brand-name suppliers and also altoffered us the Business Matching Service. With the mainland market now open to overseas products, the fair is not only a useful sourcing hub for us, but also a platform where we learn from our international counterparts as well as build up our contacts and network."
Fan Yanru, Vice Secretary General, China Commerce Association For General Merchandise, China

"I have been to the fair before and this time I'm coming with owners of 10 other Japanese companies who have never been here. They are all very impressed by the size of the fair and the variety of products on display. This event has become much better, with exhibitors showcasing individual and original designs. We like trade shows with both big and small companies because very often it is those small ones which offer unique creations – these are what we want to explore."
Hitoshi Tajima, CEO, D N A Co Ltd, Japan

alt"We are always interested in new things, especially items that are fashionable and well-made. This is the only fair that we attend and about 20% of our total orders for the year will come from this fair."
Sylvania Espelt, Designer, Espelt, Spain

"We have 150 shops in Australia so we are always looking for new suppliers and new styles, colours and designs. We have been coming to Hong Kong Fashion Week since its inception, looking not only for clothing, but also for shop fittings, lights and display units. You can't afford not to come to this fair because if there were something new, you would miss it. It's the most important fair for us."
Hans Mueller, Managing Director, Lowes, Australia
