East Gate Tower
(dōng mén chéng lóu 东门城楼), also called East Tower (dōng lóu 东楼), is located by the Liujiang River (liǔ jiāng 柳江) in Liuzhou City (liǔ zhōu shì 柳州市). It was first constructed in Ming Dynasty (míng cháo 明朝), with a history of more than 600 years. It is the best preserved ancient gate in Liuzhou.

East Gate TowerThe East Gate Tower was originally built to protect the city. In the Qing Dynasty (qīng cháo 清朝), the tower was ruined by fire, and reconstructed during the reign of Emperor Guangxu (guāng xù dì 光绪帝) . People took it as the place for commemorate Guan Di (guān dì 关帝), and called it Wudi Pavilion (wǔ dì gé 武帝阁).

The East Gate Tower is grand and of primitive simplicity. In the Ming Dynasty, the Liuzhou City is Entrance in East Gate Towerelliptic, which is different from the square city. The tower is on the edge of the elliptic. The tower covers an area of 500 square meters, 17 meters high, 20 meters wide and 11 meters deep. It is made up of the gate and the tower. The gate was on the base of huge stones. Above the gate, there is a stele on which there written two Chinese characters “东门"(dōng mén). The entrance was piled up by bricks. The entrance on the south is 3.43 meters high, 3.36 meters wide, connected with the entrance on the north, which is 4.62 meters high and 4.02 meters wide. The two entrances connected with each other and formed a corridor. In summer, people living near the gate get together to enjoy the cool. Packmen are selling, which makes it busy.

Above the gate, there is a two-storied tower. On the beam of the tower, there painted with flowers, birds, and other animals, elegant and with antique flavor. In the main hall, there sits the statue of Guan Yunchang (guān yún cháng 关云长). On both side of the statue there is a statue of Buddha. When it is festival, lots of people will come here to sacrifice Guan.

The whole gate tower is with unique characteristics of the architectures in Ming and Qing dynasties, and embodies the excellent techniques of the constructor.
