Department of Anesthesiology was founded in September 1993. It currently has nearly 100 staffs, including 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 1 supervisor of Ph.D. candidates, 2 supervisors of master degree candidates, 5 attending doctors, 7 resident doctors and 12 Ph.D. candidates and master’s degree candidates. Research interest lies in mechanism of hepatotoxicity of inhalation anesthetics, basic and clinical research regarding perioperative protection of hepatic function and jaundice anesthesia, signal transduction and gene therapy of chronic pain. The department consists of three subunits, i.e. clinical anesthesia, operation room and ICU. It is the first hepatobiliary specialty anesthesiology department concurrently composed of clinical anesthesia, ICU and pain management in China. There are about 7000 cases of anesthesia for hepatobiliary surgery, about 3000 cases of perioperative care for hepatobiliary surgery, about 200 cases of intensive therapy in ICU, about 3000 cases of anesthesia for painless gastrointestinal endoscope and about 400 cases of anesthesia for orthotopic liver transplantation.The department has completed 12 projects commissioned by the National Science Foundation Committee and multiple projects commissioned by scientific research department of Shanghai and the military. Professors of the department have taken chief-editor of 4 monographs, i.e. New Theory of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Multiple Organs Failure, Principle and Research of General Anesthesia and Inhalation Anesthetics, and taken editors in over 10 monographs. There are 159 research papers published, including 26 in SCI recruited journals. Three papers were published in full text in Anesthesiology, a internationally renowned medical journal of anesthesiology. The cooperation project with Sichuan University regarding inhalation anesthesia was granted the second prize of National Award for Advances in Technology.
