National University of Defense Technology

The National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) is a national key comprehensive university in China. It was founded in 1953 in Harbin and was moved to Changsha in 1970. NUDT is one of the first 22 universities which were approved to found Graduate Schools by the State Council in 1984, one of the 15 universities which were in the priority project for the development of national key universities during the 7th and 8th “Five-year Plan”. It is also one of the first higher-level universities designated for the “211 project” and “985” project, and supported by special funds from the central authorities.

Leading Universities of China

Project 211 Inclusion in the project means that universities have to meet scientific, technical and HR standards and to offer set advanced degree programs.

The figure of 21 and 1 within 211 are from the abbreviation of the 21st century and approximate 100 universities respectively.

China now has more than 1,700 standard institutions of higher education, and about 6 percent of them are 211 Project institutions. 211 Project schools take on the responsibility of training 4/5 of doctoral students, 2/3 of graduate students, 1/2 of students abroad and 1/3 of undergraduates. They offer 85 percent of the State's key subjects; hold 96 percent of the State's key laboratories; and utilize 70 percent of scientific research funding.

Northwestern Polytechnical University

Xinjiang University

Xinjiang University was founded in 1924 and is located in the southern part of Urumqi City. It is a national key comprehensive university with students from various ethnic groups and the only university in Xinjiang entering the national “211 Project”. On December 30th, 2000 the former Xinjiang University and Xinjiang Engineering Institute merged into a new Xinjiang University. In the past 78 years, the university has seen 65,000 students graduate.

Xinjiang University is comprised of 14 schools, which has courses and branches of study ranging from science, engineering, law and economics to management, the arts and history
