唇亡齿寒 (chún wáng chǐ hán)



During the Spring and Autumn Period (chūn qiū 春秋时期,770-476 BC), Duke Xian of the State of Jin Wanted to expand his position of strength and sphere of influence. Therefore he would like to send his troops to destroy the State of Guo on the pretest that the State of Guo often encroached on the borders of the State of Jin. But there was a third state, the State of Yu, between the State of Jin and the State of Guo, and the Jin army had to cross the State of Yu before it could reach the State of Guo. "How can my army cross the State of Yu without a hitch?" Duke Xian of the State of Jin asked his ministers.Xun Xi , one of the ministers, said, "The monarch of the State of Yu is short - sighted and covets small advantages.

高山流水 (gāo shān líu shuǐ)


During the Spring and Autumn Period (chūn qiū 春秋时期,770-476 BC), there was a man whose name was Yu Boya.Yu boya famous music master at that time, having a good command of the temperament and superb skills in playing the musical instrument. He was bright and eager to learn when he was young.He had formally acknowledged several experts as his teachers,and his skills in playing the musical instrument had already reached a fairly high level.

后来居上 (hòu lái jū shàng)


altThis set phrase is derived from the complaints Ji An made to the emperor.
Ji Anlived at the time of Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty (xī hàn 西汉,206 B.C.-A.D.24). He was respected for being upright and just and for daring to speak the truth. He did not bother about amall matters in personal behaviour and in being an official. He was particular about actual effects and ,although he did not cause a stir ,he could keep the prefecture he governed in perfect order. Because of this. the imperial court transferred him to the central government from being the perfect of the Donghai Prefecture to being a commander in charge of the appointment and dismissal of the local officals.

枕戈待旦 (zhěn gē dài dàn)


In the Western Jin Dynasty (xī jìn 西晋) there were two young men.One of them was Zu Ti and the other was Liu Kun. Both of them were men of ideals and integrity who were chivalrous and of a sanguine disposition. They not only wrote excellent articles but also were fond of practising martial arts to keep fit, in order to render meritorious service to the country. Both of them were chief clerks responsible for document administration in Luoyang. Although in appearance the Jin
Dynasty had jurisdiction of the Central Plains comprising the middle and lower reaches of the Haunch and threatened by foreign invasion.

势如破竹 (shì rú pò zhú)

altIn the late stage of the Three Kingdoms period (sān guó 三国), Sima Yan (sī mā yān 司马炎), the ruler of the state of Jin ( jìn guó 晋国), conquered the Kingdom of Shu (shǔguó 蜀国) and then took control of the Kingdom of Wei (wèi guó 魏国). However, Sima Yan was a man great ambition .Soon after the previous successes, he began to plan to put the Kingdom of Wu (wú guó 吴国) into his pocket so as to unify China as a whole. He called his civil and military officials to discuss the plan to destroy the Kingdom of Wu. Most of them thought that it would be difficult to try to destroy the Kingdom of Wu with one action because the Kingdom of Wu was still powerfull. So it would be better to wait until fuller preparations were made.
