Business Overview

The Beijing Bombers are the sole Australian Rules Football team in Beijing, China made up largely of ex-pat Australians keen to pursue and help grow this great game while abroad.

The Bombers were formed in 2003 when 12 or so guys traveled to Shanghai for the first encounter against the Shanghai Tigers.

Since the unsuccessful (but extremely fun) first tour in 2003, the club went on a hiatus for quite a while. The big challenge was, and still is, a regular and suitable venue as well as consistent numbers.

However, things picked up in 2006 when the Bombers formed once again for a further trip to Shanghai against the Tigers. This match was hotly contested with the Bombers starting well but key injuries and a late charge by the Tigers saw them fall short again.

In 2007 the Bombers went from strength to strength on and off the field. In September they were able to finally notch up win number one in an historic first ever game of AFL to be played in Beijing when the Tigers traveled to the capital to be defeated by a determined Bombers unit 105-66. They followed this up with a memorable 13 point win in the return clash in Shanghai after being down by 6 goals at half time to claim the 2007 China Cup.

Earlier in 2007 the Bombers and Tigers combined to represent the China Reds in the 2007 Asian Cup. The two teams have built up quite a rivalry, but also a partnership and friendship over these encounters.

Also in 2007 the Beijing SiShen Bombers were formed. The SiShen Bombers are made up of 100% local Chinese players mainly from Beijing Sport University. In October they played the first domestic fixture in China to be played between two 100% Chinese sides when they defeated the Tianjin Demons.

The Bombers have occasional intraclub matches and also play the odd international rules match against the Beijing Gaelic club when the Irish can find the numbers.

Training is on every weekend at BCIS http://bcis.cn/aboutus/schoollocation.html . Training is open to anyone regardless of age or ability. If you would like to come along send us an email to confirm the training time.

The Bombers are also working on getting a junior Auskick program going and are involved with development of the game via partnerships with Melbourne Football, the AFL, the City of Melbourne and local institutions.

We are always happy to hear from people so if your looking to be player, supporter, sponsor or just lend a hand to help out our efforts in developing a team worthy of this proud Olympic city we would love to hear from you!
