Business Overview

 Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication (BIGC, 北京印刷学院)is a comprehensive university under the joint jurisdiction of the State General Administration of Press and Publishing (SGAPP) and the Beijing Municipal Government, with the latter in the main.It was previously the Department of Printing in the Cultural Institute under supervision of the Ministry of Culture in 1958. Due to the National Adjustment of Higher Learning institutions and departments in 1961, the Culture Institute was closed. BIGC’s prototype--the Department of Printing was integrated into the Central Academy of Handicrafts and Fine Arts (CAHFA). In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, the Department of Printing branched out of CAHFA and expanded as BIGC.

With over 50 years of development, BIGC has become a media university with the coordination of engineering, humanities, management, and the arts.

 Based on the principle of footing in Beijing and serving the nation, BIGC carries on the responsibility of producing high level professionals for such media and communication industries as printing, packaging, and publishing. It is among the first batch of institutions that were granted the rights to confer bachelor’s degrees in China. The university is a unit acting as vice chairman of the Education Ministry’s Printing and Packaging Academic Committee and chairman of the Printing and Packaging Academic Supervising Committee for National Junior College Education, and leader of the SGAPP’s Coordinating Panel for the National Higher Learning Publishing Discipline Construction, the SGAPP and Beijing Municipality’s Training Center for High Level Publishing and Printing Professionals, the Beijing Municipality Research Base for the Publishing Industry and Culture, and the National New Media Industry Base’s Training Center for Cartoon Creation and Art Professionals.


BIGC has formed a three-level education framework of postgraduate, undergraduate, and associate degree studies. Presently it has six graduate programs in communications, art and design, industrial management, material physics and chemistry, mechanical and electronic engineering, information signaling and processing, and business management. There are two graduate programs in publishing and twenty-two undergraduate programs. The undergraduate programs include: printing engineering, packaging engineering, polymer material and engineering, digital printing, mechanical engineering and automation, industrial design, computer science and technology, electronic information engineering, automation, digital media technology, financial management, information management and information system, marketing, editing and publishing, advertising, English, culture industry management, communication (digital publishing), art and design, painting, cartooning, and digital medium art, cartoon and digital medium art. There are eight associate degree programs. They include printing graphic information processing, printing technology, printing apparatus and technology, packaging technology and design, copy reading and plate editing, multi media design and production, electronic business, and marketing for publishing. The university has over 6,900 full time students.


The university has three key construction disciplines of the Beijing Municipality, two specialties of national characteristics, four specialties of Beijing Municipal characteristics, two model centers of experimental teaching of the Beijing Municipality; basic and professional laboratories with a highly functional system, including a Beijing Municipal key laboratory for packaging material and technology, a research center for printing apparatus engineering, Beijing Municipal philosophy and social science research base for publishing industry and culture, China publication center for editing and editing studies, and a research institute for periodicals and magazines, which are provincial/ministerial level research institutions. It has established wide connections with prestigious printing and publishing enterprises at home and 89 cooperating enterprises for internship and practice. On its main campus is located the educational base for printing and publishing—the China Printing Museum with an exhibition area of over 4,600 sq. meters and a collection of over 26,000 items. The total value of its teaching and research facilities is 173,990,100 RMB, including 79 multimedia classrooms and 10 language laboratories with 9,625 seats, with 140 seats per 100 students; 2,668 computers for teaching purposes with 37.82 computers per 100 students; and a library collection of 898,300 books and 175 electronic books with the average of 116.87 books for each student.

At present, the university has 742 faculty and staff members, including 435 fulltime teachers, with 164 teachers under the age of 35. Among the fulltime faculty are 46 full professors and equally qualified technicians, 154 associate professors and the same equally qualified technicians, totaling 200, accounting for 46 % of the faculty. There are 316 fulltime teachers with a masters degree and above, accounting for 73% of the total. Two faculty members have received Bi Sheng Awards-the highest printing prize in China, four have received Morisawa Nobuo Awards of the China Printing Technology Association. Four have received Leading Figure Awards for the Press and Publishing Industry; one has been honored for mention in the Beijing Municipal Talents Project. One has received a grant from the Beijing Municipal High Level Talent Project. Eleven groups have been rated as Beijing Municipal Higher Learning Institutions Creative Teams. Eight are named Creative Talents of Beijing Municipality; and 63 are named Middle Age and Young Teaching Backbone Teachers of Beijing Municipality. Seven have been awarded as excellent teachers on the national level. Twelve have been honored as Beijing Municipal Excellent Teachers. Three have been named as Beijing Municipal Prestigious Teaching Masters; and 25 enjoy National Government Special Allowances. 


The university has developed a great variety of cultural activities,taking as the lead “Campus Culture and Art Festival”, “Students’ Science and Technology Festival”, “Students’ Research Program”, with over 30 student organizations involved, establishing a vast platform for comprehensive quality training. In recent years, students have won many awards in various kinds of competition at the international, national, and municipal levels, such as the Mobis International Competition of Multi-media Discs, the Contest in Mathematical Modeling, National Oral English Competition, Mechanical Design and Creation Competition of Capital Higher Learning Institutions, and so on, with a total of over 400 people and times involved. In order to broaden students’ international horizons and to meet their demands for further overseas study, the university has established long-term collaborative and exchange relationships, including students exchange programs and joint training programs, with overseas universities such as Ohio University in the USA, Anglia Ruskin University and Bournemouth University in the UK, Moscow State University of Printing Arts in Russia, and the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.

Challenged with epic changes brought about by the new science and technology revolution for the demand for talented professionals of media and communication and related industries, and the construction of a three-faceted Beijing and a metropolitan city, especially with the implementation of the strategies of “Digital Beijing”, “Metropolitan Economy”, and “Cultural Creation Industry”, the university firmly grasps and sticks to the pulse of the national economic and social development, the national capital’s industrial structural adjustments and its media and communication development. Therefore, it is further planning on the vision, position, characteristics,goals and key links of school management, and striving forward as a media university with unique characteristics in printing and publishing specialties and with the coordinated development of the multiple disciplines of engineering, humanities, management, and the arts. Above all, it is an important base for professional training, scientific research, and social service for the printing and publishing and related media industries of the country and Beijing Municipality.
