Monument to the People's Heroes

The Monument to the People's Heroes (rén mín yīng xióng jì niàn bēi 人民英雄纪念碑), Beijing, is a ten-story obelisk (fāng jiān shí tǎ 方尖石塔) that was erected as a national monument of the People's Republic of China. The Monument was built in memory of the martyrs (liè shì 烈士) who laid down their lives for the revolutionary struggles of the Chinese people during the 19th and 20th centuries. It was built in accordance with the resolution of the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference adopted on November 30, 1949. The monument was designed by architect Liang Sicheng (liáng sī chéng 梁思成), with some elements designed by his wife, Lin Huiyin (lín huī yīn 林徽因).

Former Residence of Song Qing Ling

Song Qingling’s Former Residence (sòng qìng líng gù jū 宋庆龄故居) covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters. The floor space is approximately 5,000 square meters. The residence was originally the mansion garden of Zai Feng (zǎi fēng 载沣), father of the last emperor of China, Pu Yi (pǔ yí 溥仪). It is also known as the West Garden. The main construction was towards the west followed by a two storey building that combined and complemented the concept of China and the western concept.

Guo Moruo Former Residence Memorial HallGuo Moruo (guō mò ruò 郭沫若) (1892-1978) was an outstanding Chinese writer, poet, dramatist, historian, archaeologist and paleographer. He wrote several historical plays and one of them is "Qu Yuan"(qǖ yuán 屈原) (1942), telling the story of a dissident poet of the 4th-century BC. He also wrote lots of studies on Chinese archaeology, history, and literature. He worked as a government official from 1949 until his death. The courtyard where Guo had lived for 15 years, from November 1963 until his death, was formerly a prince's garden during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It was listed as an important cultural relic under state protection in 1982, on Guo's 90th birthday, and officially opened to tourists in 1988.

The Great Hall of the People

Introduction:
To the west of Tian'anmen Square (tiān ān mén 天安门) lies the Great Hall of the People (rén mín dà huì táng 人民大会堂), one of the truly grand modern structure of Beijing. Its green and yellow glazed-tile roof, magnificent portico and colonnades, and rows of pines and cypresses create a look both solemn and immense. Construction was completed over a 10-month period in 1959.
