Xiangxi(湘西) is the abbreviation for Xiangxi Tujia-Miao autonomous Prefecture(湘西土家族苗族自治州)which is located in northwestern Hunan(湖南). Well situated between Hunan and Sichuan(四川), Touching Hubei(湖北) and Guizhou(贵州). Xiangxi covers an area of 15,486 square kilometers. Xiangxi Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture has jurisdiction over seven counties—Longshan(龙山), Yongshun(永顺), Baojing(保靖), Huayuan(花垣), Guzhang, Fenghuang(凤凰) and Luxi(泸溪), and one city—Jishou(吉首), the capital of the prefecture. Twenty-five nationalities gather here, of the total 2,480,000 population, 66.6 per cent are ethnic, including 860,000 Tujia and 790.000 Miao.

This town has a history of over 1300 years and some of the old gardens, residential buildings, bridges and pagodas date back as far as the Ming (míng 明) and Qing (qīng 清) Dynasties (1644-1911). Dongjiang Lake (dōng jiāng hú 东江湖) lies in the upper reaches of Dongjiang River (dōng jiāng 东江) of Zixing City (zī xīng shì 资兴市), with a lake surface area of 160 sq. kilometers, and a water storage of 8.2 billion sq. kilometers, is equivalent to half a Dongting Lake (dòng tíng hú 洞庭湖), known as "South Dongting Lake of Hunan"; and is also praised as "Oriental Switzerland" for its picturesque scenery.

During the third general census of cultural relics in Hunan Province, an ancient road built during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 b.c.) was discovered around the environs of Dengjiatang Village, Chenzhou City in the province.
This roadway served as an important communications route two thousand years ago. "That ancient road is comparable to today's highway from Beijing to Zhuhai," Xie Wujing, an ancient road specialist in the Hunan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau said.
