Wunu Mountain

Wunu Mountain (wǔ nǚ shān 五女山), which means the mountain of Five Women, is a mountain of historical and cultural significance located in the north of Huanren Manchu Autonomous County (huán rén mǎn zú zì zhì xiàn 桓仁满族自治县). The mountain is a cuboid surrounded by vertical cliffs that would prove nearly impermeable to any kind of attack. The main peak is the 804 meters’ high, 1500 meters from south to north and 300 meters from east to west. It was handed down by several names such as Heshenggu City (hé shēng gǔ chéng 纥升骨城), Heluo City (hé luó chóng 合罗城), Wulong Mountain (wǔ lóng shān 五龙山), Wulao Mountain (wǔ lǎo shān 五老山), Yuling Mountain (yù líng shān 郁灵山), Yulang Mountain (yú láng shān 于郎山), and Wuyu Mountain (wǔ yú shān 五余山). As the birthplace of Goguryeo and one of the three kingdoms of Korea, Wunu Mountain is internationally famous with its peculiar and beautiful landscapes.

History
Ancient RuinsWunu Mountain is the site on which the ancient Korean Goguryeo Kingdom was founded in 37 B.C. Price Zhu Meng (zhū méng 朱蒙) was exiled to this place, and built the first kingdom here called Heshenggu City. It was the first mountain city in history, its special construction form effects a lot of countries in northeast Asia. It was also the place where Li Manzhu (lǐ mǎn zhù 李满柱), the third king of Jurchen, established the Manchu kingdom in 1424.

Wunu Mountain is called the East Acropolis. As the Athens Acropolis and Mycenaean Acropolis, Wunu Mountain also has the six elements, including fane, palace, barn, barracks, water source and city walls of more than 200 meters above the relative sea level

Observation Tower
The observation tower is the highest place in the mountain. You can see what remains of the Goguryeo Kingdom as well as an impressive view of Huanren reservoir, the largest reservoir in Liaoning Province (liáo níng shěng 辽宁省).

Water Source
If you want to live in a mountain city, the water source is obviously important. There are two sources at the top of the mountain, one is at the west side of the mountain city called Tian Chi (tiān chí 天池) which is 12 meters long and 5 meters wide. It is the most important water source. Another one is at the east of the city called Yinma Wan (yǐn mǎ wān 饮马湾), which is naturally formed and never dry.

Wedge Stone
RelicsWedge stone construction is the unique example in Chinese city architecture history. Goguryeo people put their wisdom in the stones. After two thousands years, the stones remains the same, while in the central place of China, bricks and tiles have all decayed. The mountain city constructed by wedge stones is the most important ruins in Mt. Wunu, it has great value both in architecture and military.

Main Peak
Mt.WunuWunu Mountain looks like an up-side-down boot, the main peak is the boot sole stretching into the sky from the halfway of the mountain. To take an overlook, the whole mountain is like a footprint.
It's a steep hike up Wunu Mountain that requires a reasonable level of fitness. The hike down the opposite side of the mountain is exhilarating. A section of the path consists of a steel walkway bolted into a cliff. The path is quite safe, but those who are squeamish around heights may want to exit via the entrance path.
