Nanchang (Nán chāng 南昌), literally translated "Southern Prosperity", is the capital of Jiangxi Province (jiāng xī shěng 江西省) in southeastern China. It is located in the north-central portion of the province, famous for its scenery, rich history and cultural sites. Anciently, Nanchang was most famous for its merchants, alchemists and tea. It was one of the key transit stations for porcelain, from the ancient town of Jingdezhen (jǐng dé zhèn 景德镇) to the northeast. The city remains an important farming area for grains, edible-oil, meat, milk, aquatic products and vegetables.   Show map

Nanchang Climate
Nanchang has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. It enjoys a warm climate and abounds in rainfall. Winters are short and fairly mild, but with occasional frosts and snow. Summer is long and humid, with amongst the highest temperatures in China. The city is listed among one of the four hottest cities in China, together with Nanjing (nán jīng 南京), Chongqing (zhòng qìng 重庆) and Wuhan (wǔ hàn 武汉), the so-called "Four Furnaces".
Nanchang History
nanchang historyIt was the early twentieth century, however, that was to bring the city its present fame. The turbulent years of the Republic of China Period (1911-1950) were to come to a head for the emerging communist party in 1927, when Chiang Kaishek (jiǎng jiè shí 蒋介石) once again broke off from his "United Front". He purged Communists from the Nationalist Party and massacred suspected red members in a number of cities, including the Nanchang Commune in April, 1927. Two members of the Nationalist army and renowned communists, Zhou Enlai (zhōu ēn lái 周恩来) and Zhu De (zhū dé 朱德), quartered in an old hotel, staged an uprising on August 1st, 1927 with a force of 30,000 (the first, fully organized People's Liberation Army), taking Nanchang after a five hour street battle. The troops lasted for three days until they were forced to flee, making their way to a remote mountain, Mount Jinggangshan (jǐng gāng shān 井冈山), to join a little known band of troops headed by a young Hunanese called Mao Zedong (máo zé dōng 毛泽东). The Jinggangshan base area, also known as the Jiangxi Soviet, is now a resort with some beautiful hiking possibilities.
