   Jinshan Mountain
Jinshan Mountain
(jīn shān 金山) is located in the northwest Zhenjiang City (zhèn jiāng shì 镇江市), only 3 kilometers away from the city center. In ancient times, Jinshan Mountain is an island in Yangtze River (cháng jiāng 长江), and was called “a hibiscus in the Yangtze River”(jiāng xīn fú róng 江心芙蓉). Till the Daoguang (dào guāng 道光) era in Qing Dynasty (qīng cháo 清朝), the island connected with the land of the south bank. It is of 44 meters high. Jinshan Mountain is regarded as a “fairy tale mountain”(shén huà shān 神话山) for each scenic spot there has a beautiful story. With its beautiful scenery, it has long been a tourist attraction.

The Gate of Jinshan TempleThe most famous scenic spot in Jinshan Garden (jīn shān gōng yuán 金山公园) is Jinshan Temple (jīn shān sì 金山寺), which is one ot the national famous temples. This temple can be traced back as early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty (dōng jìn 东晋, 317-420), with a long history of more than 1600 years. It was originally called Zexin Temple (zé xīn sì 泽心寺) in history, and was called Jiangtian Temple (jiāng tiān chán sì 江天禅寺) during Qing Dynasty.

A widely spread legend, “The White Snake”(bái shé zhuàn 白蛇传) happened in the temple. The story mainly tells about the love story between Lady White (bái niáng zǐ 白娘子), Who was a magic snake and changed herself into a beautiful girl, and Xu Xian (xǔ xiān 许仙) who was forced to be a monk in Jinshan Temple at the latter part of the story.

The Great Buddha's HallThe gate of Jinshan Temple faces west, which is different from the other temples. It is said that long long ago, the gate of this temple faces the south. But the temple was always destroyed by fire, and there was loud noise around the temple, which made the monks in Jinshan Temple uneasy, and thought that it was suspicious. They invited a roamed monk to divine. The monk said that the gate was facing to the South Gate of Heaven, and made the God of Heaven angry. Then the abbot of Jinshan Temple ordered other monks to change the orientations of the gate. However, there is a reason for the west facing gate which is that tourists can see the Yangtze River flowing down to the east through the gate.

Entering into the gate there is the Hall of Heavenly King (tiān wáng diàn 天王殿), with a Maitreya Buddha (mí lè fó 弥勒佛) enshrining in it. On both sides of the statue, there are the Four Heavenly Guardians (sì dà jīn gāng 四大金刚), tall and vivid. Behind this hall there is the Great Buddha’s Hall (dà xióng bǎo diàn 大雄宝殿). In the center of the hall there is the statue of Sakyamuni, Bhaisajyaguru Buddha (yào shī fó 药师佛) and Amitabha (ē mí tuó fó 阿弥陀佛). On the west there are the 18 arhats.

Jinshan TempleBesides, there are other attractions. Climbing up the mountain behind the Great Buddha’s Hall there is the Xizhao Pavilion (xī zhào gé 夕照阁), in which there are 7 tablets engraved in the rein of Emperor Qianlong (qián lóng dì 乾隆帝). There is also the Guanyin Pavilion (guān yīn gé 观音阁) in the mountain, in which there exhibit the four treasures of the Jinshan Mountain---- a bronze ding in Western Zhou Dynasty (zhōu dǐng 周鼎), Zhuge Bronze Drum (zhū gě tóng gǔ 诸葛铜鼓), Jade Belt of Su Dongpo (dōng pō yù dài 东坡玉带), and the picture of Jinshan Mountain draw by Wen Zhengming (wén zhēng míng huì jīn shān tú 文征明绘金山图).
