Shanghai Grand Theater is located at 190, Huangpi Road (huáng pí lù 黄陂路) on the west of the People’s Square (rén mín guǎng chǎng 人民广场). The building was designed by French architect Jean-Marie Charpentier and altcovers a floor area of 11,528 m². Interior design was by Studios Architecture.

It was opened in 1998. On the top of the theater are outdoor theaters and a mid-air garden, which are in the shape of a treasure bowl, symbolizing the broad-mindedness of Shanghai in attracting the cultural art of the world. The Grand Theater has a total floor space of 70 thousand square meters, inside which are three theaters. The lyric theater, which has 1,800 seats, is for the performance of ballets, musicals and symphonies. It consists of a main state of 728 square meters, a rear stage of 360 square meters and a left and right wings of 257 square meters respectively, all of which can be moved, lifted, sloped and rotated. In addition, the Grand Theater is also equipped with orchestra pits (yuè chí 乐池) that can be raised and electric setting booms.

All these have made the lyric theater one of the biggest and most advanced stages in Asia and even the whole world. The drama theater, which has 600 seats, is for the performance of chamber music, and the studio theater, which has 200 seats, is for the performance of operas and song-and-dance dramas. Moreover, Shanghai Grand Theater also has 12 rehearsal halls of different sizes, gymnasiums, scene-setting rooms and make-up rooms of different kinds, banquet halls, cultural exhibition halls, and underground garages.

The lyric theatre has world-class stage facilities. It is composed of the main stage, the rear stage, the left wing and the right wing. All these stages can be removed, lifted, sloped and rotated. The lyric theatre also has high requirement for acoustics construction and lighting equipment. In addition to performances, the Shanghai Grand Theatre has a restaurant for tourists with an area of 1,600 square meters and a shopping center for audio-video products with an area of 2,500 square meters. Also there are VIP room, cafe, underground garage and equipment concerned.

altSince its opening on August 27, 1998 the Shanghai Grand Theatre has successfully staged such shows and evenings as operas, musicals, ballets, symphonies, chamber music concerts, spoken drama and the Chinese operas. It also has a high reputation both at home and abroad as many high officials and VIPs, both domestic and international, gave the highest praises of the theatre for its perfect combination of art and architecture after they visited the theatre. Now it has become an splendid window of cultural exchange between China and the world.
